May is time for Avocado Lime & Cinco De Mayo.

Avocados-and-limes

Cinco De Mayo is celebrated mainly throughout the western United States and Mexico and is always a good reason to join together for great food, beverages and fun.  While you are having fun washing down your chips & guacamole with ice-cold margaritas, do you know exactly WHAT you are celebrating?  El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla).

The Battle of Puebla took place on 5 May 1862 near the city of Puebla during the French intervention in Mexico. The battle ended in a victory for the Mexican Army over the occupying French forces. The French eventually overran the Mexicans in subsequent battles, but the Mexican victory at Puebla against a much better equipped and larger French army provided a significant morale boost to the Mexican army and also helped slow the French army’s advance towards Mexico City.

The Mexican victory is celebrated yearly on the fifth of May. Its celebration is regional in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is celebrated as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla. There is some limited recognition of the holiday in other parts of Mexico, however the holiday remains very popular in the United States where it is celebrated yearly as Cinco de Mayo.

Mexican Americans see the day as a source of pride; one way they can honor their ethnicity is to celebrate this day.  Another way for us to honor them is to honor those who have brought over their farming skills and seeds which grow many of the orchards of the Avocado and Lime.  They supply us with wonderful health benefits.  Avocado and Limes are bountiful in the California landscape and I really want to send thanks and appreciation to the farmers that grow these important fruits.  Support your local farmers!! http://www.californiaavocadogrowers.com/Avacado-Lime

I supported our local growers (Franciscos Fruits) when I made my batches of this month’s Soap of the Month – Avocado Lime + E.
Try out this wonderful antioxidant soap.

We thought since this soap was inspired by Avocado, Lime and of course guacamole we would share our guacamole recipe with you.
We hope you enjoy and Happy Cinco De Mayo!
