Spring Has Sprung Early!!!

20150307_084558_resizedSpring in my garden has sprung early!  It has been so warm in SoCal that if you blinked you missed our winter.  85 degrees today and the garden is loving it.  These are my Kaffer and Calla Lilies.  We are still waiting for most of our Calla Lily flowers to fold open their wonderful white petals.  We usually get so many flowers I can fill every room in the house with their statuesque beauty!  Calla_lily   20150307_084550_resized

And surprise, surprise – our grapes are sprouting early too!  This gorgeous weather is going to bring some early pickings.  You can only guess what that means:  Grape antioxidants juiced down to make a spectacular new soap recipe.  Yeah!

Don’t forget to spring your clocks forward 1 hour tonight, if you happen to be in one of the pesky states that move your daylight savings times around.

Green Apple Mint & Honey


This wonderful jelly was the inspiration for this months soap of the month and featured orchard!

The crisp apple, cool mint and the warming wonderful sweet scent of honey which goes into this tasty jelly had me turn from my cooking kitchen to the soap kitchen to come up with a skin version of these wonderful ingredients with many amazing skin benefits like,

  • Green-Apple-Mint-HoneyPeppermint Essential Oil which activates receptors in the skin and is the primary source for the cooling sensation on the skin after topical use.
  • Honey which draws and locks in moisture.
  • Apple extract and juice which contains vitamin C and helps in preventing damage to skin cells from free radicals. The antioxidants it contains help in cell rejuvenation and healthy glowing skin.

You should try both these wonderful gems! And with Spring & Easter upon us the apple mint jelly is a great recipe to add to your holiday line up.

Apple Mint Jelly

4 c. apple juice (juicing fresh apples are best)
1 (2 1/2 oz.) pkg. powdered fruit pectin
2 tbsp. crushed mint leaves
4 c. sugar
1 c. honey

In large saucepan or kettle, combine apple juice, fruit pectin, crushed mint. Cook and stir over high heat until mixture comes to full rolling boil. Stir in sugar immediately. Bring to full rolling boil again; stir in honey and boil hard for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; skim foam and strain out mint leaves. Pour into hot scalded jars. Seal. Makes 7 half pints.
